Site Hierarchy

This page documents the rules for the site directory:

  1. Which types of directories you can use
  2. Which types of directories can or can't be nested within each other

For a quick overview consider this layout:

Directory My site/ Site directory
Manifest site.eno
Directory My artist/ Artist directory
Manifest artist.eno
Directory My catalog/ Catalog directory
Manifest catalog.eno
Directory My track/ Track directory
Manifest track.eno
Audio file my_track.flac
Directory My multitrack/ Multitrack directory
Manifest multitrack.eno
Audio file my_first_track.flac
Audio file my_second_track.flac
Directory My nested track/ Track directory
Manifest track.eno
Audio file my_nested_track.flac
Directory My track group/ Track group directory
… (Further track or track group directories)
Directory My site group/ Site group directory
… (Further artist, catalog, multitrack, track or site group directories)

Faircamp has different types of directories, detailed below. How you name them is entirely up to you and has no effect. The files you put into them will tell Faircamp what type they are. A directory can only be of one type. If you mix their characteristics and content, Faircamp will report this to you as an issue that needs to be resolved.

Rules for nesting: Artist, catalog, multitrack and track directories can not be nested within each other, with one obvious exception: Track directories may be nested within multitrack directories. All types of directories may be (recursively) nested in site group directories. Inside a multitrack directory, track directories may be (recursively) nested within track group directories.

Artist directory

A directory that contains at least an artist.eno manifest.

No other directories can be nested inside an artist directory (except such that only contain accompanying assets like images and are otherwise not specifically recognized by Faircamp).

Catalog directory

A directory that contains at least a catalog.eno manifest.

No other directories can be nested inside a catalog directory (except such that only contain accompanying assets like images and are otherwise not specifically recognized by Faircamp).

Multitrack directory

A directory that directly contains at least one of these two:

  • A multitrack.eno manifest
  • Two or more audio files

Inside a multitrack directory you may place any number of track directories. You may also (recursively) nest any number of track group directories inside it. Within these, you can again put any number of track directories, at any level.

Site directory

The root directory containing all of your site, which can optionally contain a single site.eno manifest.

Inside the site directory, any other directory types can be placed. In fact, anything you put on your site (except accompanying site assets like images, favicons, etc.) must be put into its own directory.

Site group directory

A subdirectory of the site directory that may contain:

  • A defaults.eno manifest
  • Any number of artist, catalog, multitrack or track directories
  • Any number of site group directories

Track directory

A directory that directly contains at least one of these two:

  • A track.eno manifest
  • Exactly one audio file

No other directories can be nested inside a track directory (except such that only contain accompanying assets like images and are otherwise not specifically recognized by Faircamp).

Track group directory

A subdirectory of a multitrack directory that may contain:

  • A defaults.eno manifest
  • Any number of track directories
  • Any number of track group directories
