Universal settings

Settings that exist and work exactly the same way on different entities of a faircamp site can be assigned to all of them in a single, concise declaration. These are called universal settings.

For instance: Artists, catalogs, multitracks and tracks all share the same theme settings, therefore these settings can be assigned to all of them at once (as a default, usually at the site level) with such a declaration:

*.theme.mode: dark

... which is functionally the same as this:

artist.theme.mode: dark
catalog.theme.mode: dark
multitrack.theme.mode: dark
track.theme.mode: dark

Universal scope varies per setting

Some universal settings apply only to some entities, for instance only to multitracks and tracks. Some can take effect as a local and default setting at the same time. For instance, within a multitrack manifest:

*.download_formats:
- opus
- flac

... is functionally the same as this:

multitrack.download_formats:
- flac
- opus

track.download_formats:
- flac
- opus

... and it means:

  1. Set the download formats flac & opus for this multitrack release (a local setting)
  2. Set the download formats flac & opus for all tracks in this multitrack release (a default setting)

The download formats can then still be changed for specific tracks in the multitrack release by setting the track.download_formats setting in their respective manifests, each overriding the universal default setting.

Note that the declaration *.visibility: unlisted should be handled with care in the context of multitrack releases: Unlisting a multitrack (multitrack.visibility: unlisted) automatically makes the tracks inside it inherit the unlisted status already, excluding them from browse/search and any other public listings. Using *.visibility: unlisted, all tracks in a multitrack release are also unlisted from the multitrack itself, resulting in an empty multitrack, which is usually not what you want.
